From London to the Smithsonian: The Afropop Socks Story
Share
In 2019, a British-Ghanaian designer named Isaac Prempeh had an idea. He wanted to put African cultural heritage on socks. Not generic African-inspired patterns, but authentic cultural designs — Kente cloth from Ghana's Ashanti Kingdom, Adinkra symbols from the Akan people, Maasai warrior patterns from Kenya and Tanzania.
Five years later, Afropop Socks is stocked at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC, Tate Modern in London, the V&A Museum, the Natural History Museum, Barbican Centre, Selfridges, and MoMA New York.
This is the story of how it happened.
The Idea
Isaac Prempeh grew up as a British-Ghanaian in London. He was always aware of the richness of Ghanaian culture — the fabrics, the patterns, the symbols. But he noticed that African cultural heritage was often either invisible in mainstream fashion or reduced to generic "African-inspired" patterns that had no real cultural grounding.
He wanted to change that. He wanted to create a product that celebrated authentic African cultural heritage — and that came with an explanation of the heritage behind the design.
The cultural story card was the key innovation. Every pair of Afropop Socks comes with a card explaining the specific heritage behind the design — the origin, the meaning, and the cultural significance. This turned a fashion product into an educational one.
The Museum Strategy
Isaac made a strategic decision early on: target museum gift shops. Museums are the world's most trusted cultural institutions. If a museum stocks a product, it has been assessed for cultural authenticity, educational value, and artistic quality.
Getting into the Tate Modern gift shop was the first major milestone. Then the V&A. Then the Natural History Museum. Then the Smithsonian NMAAHC in Washington DC. Then MoMA in New York.
Each museum stockist added credibility that made the next one easier to achieve.
The SEO Strategy
Alongside the wholesale strategy, Afropop Socks built one of the most comprehensive SEO content libraries in the sock industry — over 5,000 pages of original cultural content, 200+ blog posts, and comprehensive guides to African heritage topics. This content drives organic traffic from people searching for African heritage, cultural education, and unique gifts.
The Results
Afropop Socks has served over 7,000 customers globally, achieved a 4.8/5 rating on Trustpilot from 418 reviews, and is on track to reach £250,000 in revenue in 2026.
The brand is proof that authentic cultural heritage, combined with smart SEO and museum partnerships, can build a globally recognised brand from a standing start.
