It all started with a suitcase full of fabric.

When I was growing up, my mother would return from visits to Ghana with bold, beautiful textiles, rich in colour, meaning, and history. She never saw them as anything extraordinary. But to me, they were electric. They told stories. They held power. They looked like home, even from miles away.

Years later, as I sat at my kitchen table sketching ideas for a creative side project, I kept thinking about those patterns. What if those stories could live not just in wardrobes for special occasions, but in everyday fashion, in something as simple as socks?

That question became the spark.
And from that spark, Afropop Socks was born.

🎨 A Vision Beyond Style

From the beginning, Afropop Socks was never just about fashion. It was about visibility.

I wanted to create something that made culture wearable, something that could stand boldly in shops and homes where African stories were often missing or misrepresented. I wanted socks that were made with care, designed with purpose, and rooted in heritage, not just trendy prints with no context.

Each pair we release is inspired by real symbols, real patterns, and real traditions from across the African continent, from Adinkra symbols in Ghana to Bogolan mud cloth in Mali, to Zulu and Ndebele design influences from Southern Africa. We research, we listen, we honour.

📦 From Packing Orders at Home to Shelves Around the World

When we launched in 2019, I packed every order by hand. I was handwriting thank-you notes, responding to every DM, and balancing fatherhood, day jobs, and late-night design tweaks.

Fast forward to now, and Afropop Socks is proudly stocked in:

• Tate Modern

• The British Museum

• Barbican Centre

• Museum of London

• Smithsonian Institution

• And hundreds of gift shops, concept stores, and museum boutiques across the UK, US, and Europe

Every time I see our socks on a new shelf, I think of my mother’s suitcase.
I think of that first order.
I think of how far a story can travel when you dare to tell it.
