There's something different about buying a gift from a museum shop. I noticed it before I ever had a product in one.
Museum gift shop buyers are essentially curators. They don't just ask "will this sell?" They ask "does this belong here?" They assess every product for cultural authenticity, educational value, and artistic quality. Only things that pass all three make it onto the shelves.
When Tate Modern agreed to stock Afropop Socks, it wasn't just a commercial decision. It was a curatorial one.
