Adinkra Symbols — The Complete Meaning Guide
Share
Adinkra symbols are a collection of visual symbols from the Akan people of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Each symbol carries a specific meaning — a proverb, a concept, or a philosophical idea. Here is the complete guide to Adinkra symbols and their meanings.
What Are Adinkra Symbols?
Adinkra symbols are visual symbols created by the Akan people of Ghana. The word "Adinkra" means "goodbye" or "farewell" in the Twi language — the symbols were originally used on cloth worn at funerals. Today, Adinkra symbols appear on fabric, jewellery, architecture, and fashion across the African diaspora.

The most widely used Adinkra symbol. It represents the supremacy of God and the omnipotence of the divine. Found on everything from fabric to architecture across Ghana.
