Ghana Independence Day: The Story of Africa's First Free Nation
Share
On March 6, 1957, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule, a moment that changed the course of African history and inspired independence movements across the continent.
Kwame Nkrumah and the Independence Movement
Ghana's independence was led by Kwame Nkrumah, one of the most important political figures in African history. Nkrumah founded the Convention People's Party in 1949 and led a campaign of non-violent resistance against British colonial rule.
On the night of independence, Nkrumah declared: "Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever." The crowd erupted in celebration, and the independence movement spread across Africa.
Ghana's Cultural Legacy
Ghana is the cultural heartland of the African diaspora, the home of Kente cloth, Adinkra symbols, and the Ashanti Kingdom. It is also the ancestral home of many African Americans, whose ancestors were taken from the Gold Coast during the transatlantic slave trade.
