The Kente Cloth Guide — Everything You Need to Know
Share
Kente cloth is one of the most recognisable and culturally significant textiles in the world. Here is everything you need to know about Kente cloth — its history, its meaning, and why Afropop Socks has made it the centrepiece of its design collection.
What Is Kente Cloth?
Kente cloth is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips. It originated with the Ashanti people of Ghana and is one of the most important cultural symbols of West Africa. The word "Kente" comes from the Akan word "kenten", meaning basket.
History of Kente Cloth
According to Ashanti tradition, Kente cloth was first woven by two brothers who observed a spider weaving its web and were inspired to create a similar technique. The first Kente cloth was woven in the village of Bonwire in the Ashanti region of Ghana, where master weavers still produce Kente today.
Kente was originally worn exclusively by royalty. The Asantehene (King of the Ashanti) and other royal figures wore Kente at important ceremonies. Over time, Kente became more widely available, but it retained its status as a symbol of cultural pride and heritage.
