Notting Hill Carnival: Europe's Biggest Street Party
Share
Notting Hill Carnival is Europe's largest street festival, a two-day celebration of Caribbean and African culture that takes place every August Bank Holiday weekend in West London. With 2 million visitors annually, it is one of the most extraordinary cultural events in the world.
The History of Notting Hill Carnival
Notting Hill Carnival was founded in 1966 by Claudia Jones, a Trinidadian activist who created it as a response to the race riots of 1958. She wanted to celebrate Caribbean culture and bring communities together.
Today, Notting Hill Carnival is a massive celebration of Caribbean and African culture, featuring steel bands, soca music, calypso, reggae, and Afrobeats, as well as elaborate costumes, street food, and cultural performances.
Carnival and African Heritage Fashion
Notting Hill Carnival is one of the most important occasions for African heritage fashion in the UK, with thousands of revellers wearing bold Kente cloth, Ankara print, and Pan-African colours.
