Why Do Socks Get Holes? 5 Causes and How to Prevent Them
Share
Nothing is more frustrating than a new pair of socks developing holes after just a few wears. Here are the five most common causes — and how to prevent them.
1. Wrong Shoe Size
If your shoes are too big, your foot slides around inside, creating friction between the sock and shoe. This friction wears through the heel and toe of the sock quickly. Make sure your shoes fit correctly — your heel should not slip when you walk.
2. Poor Quality Yarn
Cheap socks are made from low-quality yarn with short fibres that break down quickly. Premium socks like Afropop Socks use combed cotton — a process that removes short fibres, leaving only the longest, strongest fibres for a more durable sock.
3. Sharp Toenails
Long or jagged toenails can cut through sock fabric from the inside. Trim toenails regularly and file any sharp edges.
4. Washing at Too High a Temperature
Hot water weakens cotton fibres over time. Wash socks at 30°C or below to preserve the yarn strength.
5. Wearing the Wrong Size Sock
A sock that is too small stretches the fabric beyond its intended tension, weakening the fibres. A sock that is too large bunches up inside the shoe, creating friction points. Always wear the correct size.
How Afropop Socks Are Built to Last
Afropop Socks are made from premium combed cotton with reinforced heels and toes. The combing process removes short, weak fibres, leaving only the longest, strongest fibres. This makes our socks significantly more durable than standard cotton socks.
