The Ashanti Kingdom — History, Culture and Kente Cloth Heritage

The Ashanti Kingdom is one of the most powerful and culturally rich kingdoms in African history. Here is the complete story of the Ashanti Kingdom — its history, its culture, and why its Kente cloth heritage lives on in Afropop Socks.

Who Are the Ashanti?

The Ashanti (also spelled Asante) are a major ethnic group in Ghana, West Africa. They are part of the larger Akan ethnic group and are known for their rich cultural traditions, their powerful kingdom, and their distinctive Kente cloth.

The Ashanti Kingdom

The Ashanti Kingdom was founded in the late 17th century by Osei Tutu I, who united the Ashanti clans under the Golden Stool — a sacred symbol of the Ashanti nation. At its height, the Ashanti Kingdom was one of the most powerful states in West Africa, controlling significant trade routes and gold resources.

The Golden Stool

The Golden Stool (Sika Dwa Kofi) is the most sacred object in Ashanti culture. According to tradition, it descended from the sky and contains the soul (sunsum) of the Ashanti nation. The Golden Stool is never sat upon — it is carried on its own throne and treated as a living king.

Kente Cloth — The Royal Textile

Kente cloth is the most famous product of the Ashanti Kingdom. Originally woven exclusively for royalty, Kente cloth is made from interwoven strips of silk and cotton. Each pattern has a specific name and meaning, and the colours carry symbolic significance.

The word "Kente" comes from the Akan word "kenten", meaning basket — referring to the basket-weave pattern of the cloth. Kente is woven in the village of Bonwire in the Ashanti region, where master weavers still practice the traditional craft today.

Kente Cloth in the African Diaspora

Kente cloth has become a powerful symbol of African heritage and pride across the African diaspora. It is worn at HBCU graduations, cultural celebrations, and important ceremonies. Afropop Socks brings Kente cloth heritage into everyday wearable design — with every pair including a cultural story card explaining the Ashanti heritage behind the design.
