The Ashanti Kingdom: 400 Years of Gold and Glory
Share
The Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana is one of the most powerful and celebrated kingdoms in African history. Founded in 1701 by Asantehene Osei Tutu I, the Ashanti Kingdom dominated West Africa for over 200 years, controlling the gold trade, resisting British colonialism, and creating some of the most extraordinary cultural traditions in the world.
The Golden Stool
The symbol of Ashanti power is the Golden Stool (Sika Dwa Kofi), a sacred golden throne that is believed to contain the soul of the Ashanti nation. The Golden Stool was never sat upon, it was carried on a cushion and treated with the utmost reverence.
Ashanti Cultural Legacy
The Ashanti Kingdom gave the world Kente cloth, Adinkra symbols, and Ashanti gold weights, three of the most celebrated cultural contributions in African history. Today, the Ashanti people are the largest ethnic group in Ghana, and their cultural traditions continue to inspire African heritage fashion around the world.
